Sage · Troubleshooting
If your Sage 50 bank reconciliation won't match, shows a discrepancy, or hasn't cleared in months, it's almost always one of a handful of causes. Here's how to find the difference — and how we fix it for good.
(805) 219-7294Quick answer
A Sage 50 reconciliation that won't match is almost always a wrong opening balance, a duplicate or missing entry, a wrong-dated transaction, or an edited prior entry. Check the opening balance first, then tick each statement line — that finds most differences. Stuck or months behind? We rebuild it.
Start here
Work through these in order — one of them is almost always the culprit.
The reconciliation's opening balance doesn't match last month's cleared balance — everything after it will be off.
A payment or deposit entered twice (often once manually and once via bank feed) throws the total off.
A transaction dated in the wrong period sits outside the statement window you're reconciling.
A previously reconciled transaction was later changed or deleted, breaking a prior period.
Charges or interest on the statement that were never entered in Sage 50.
A simple digit swap — 54 entered as 45 — creates a difference divisible by nine.
Fix it
Confirm it equals last month's final cleared balance. If not, fix that period first.
Match each statement line to Sage 50, flagging anything missing, duplicated, or wrong-dated.
A difference divisible by nine hints at a transposition; a round number often means a whole entry is missing or doubled.
Fix the offending entries (and any broken prior period), then complete the reconciliation so it ties to the bank.
When to get help
If a prior reconciliation was broken, or several months have gone un-reconciled, the difference can compound and become hard to trace on your own. That's routine work for us — we rebuild the reconciliations, correct the underlying entries, and get every account tying out to the bank again.
Questions
The usual causes are duplicate or missing transactions, entries dated in the wrong period, a changed or deleted transaction from a prior reconciliation, an incorrect statement opening balance, or uncleared items that were never matched. Working through these in order almost always finds the difference.
Small discrepancies are often bank fees or interest not yet entered, a transposed figure (for example 54 entered as 45), or a payment entered twice. A quick review of transactions around the statement date usually pinpoints it.
Confirm the opening balance matches last month's cleared balance, compare each statement line to Sage, look for duplicates and wrong-dated entries, and check whether a previously reconciled transaction was later edited or deleted. Once the offending entries are corrected, the reconciliation clears.
Yes. We regularly rebuild reconciliations that are months behind or that drifted out of balance — correcting the underlying entries and reconciling each period until every account ties out to the bank.
