QuickBooks Multi-Currency Setup (USD, CAD & More)

Invoicing US customers in USD while you report in CAD? Paying overseas suppliers? Multi-currency keeps those balances accurate and shows the foreign-exchange impact — but one setting is permanent, so it pays to get it right the first time. We set it up and keep it clean for businesses across the United States and Canada.

Quick answer

Multi-currency lets QuickBooks track foreign customers, vendors, and accounts in their own currency while reporting in your home currency. Turn it on in Advanced settings — but first confirm your home currency, because once enabled it is permanent and can't be switched off. QuickBooks then handles exchange rates and the realized/unrealized gains and losses automatically.

Before you switch it on

What to know about multi-currency

A few things catch businesses out — worth understanding before you enable the feature.

It's permanent

Once multi-currency is on it can't be turned off, and the home currency is locked. Fixing a wrong choice usually means a fresh file.

Home currency first

Set the currency you actually file and report in before enabling. Everything else is measured against it.

Rates move daily

Balances revalue as rates change, so the same foreign invoice can be worth different amounts over time.

Gains & losses appear

You'll see realized and unrealized FX gain/loss lines — they're normal, but they need to be understood and reconciled.

Questions

QuickBooks multi-currency — FAQs

How do I turn on multi-currency in QuickBooks?

Multi-currency is enabled in your account or company settings under the Advanced section. Before switching it on, set your home currency correctly — the currency your business files and reports in. Once multi-currency is turned on it cannot be turned off, and the home currency cannot be changed, so it is worth confirming the setup before you commit.

Can I change my home currency after enabling multi-currency?

No. Once multi-currency is enabled, the home currency is permanent and the feature cannot be switched off. If the wrong home currency was chosen, the usual fix is a new company file set up correctly. We review this before you enable anything so you do not get stuck with the wrong base currency.

How does QuickBooks handle exchange rates?

QuickBooks can download exchange rates automatically or let you enter your own rate on each transaction. Foreign balances are revalued to your home currency, which creates realized gains or losses when a foreign invoice or bill is paid, and unrealized gains or losses on amounts still outstanding at period end.

Do I need multi-currency for cross-border US and Canada business?

If you invoice or pay in a currency other than your home currency — for example a Canadian business billing US customers in USD — multi-currency keeps those balances accurate and reports the foreign-exchange impact. If every transaction is in your home currency, you usually do not need it. We help you decide before turning it on.

Can you clean up a multi-currency file that is already a mess?

Yes. Mis-set home currency, wrong rates, and foreign balances that never revalue are common. We review the setup, correct the exchange-rate and gain/loss entries where possible, reconcile each currency, and get your statements reporting correctly in your home currency.
